Moorlands Primary

Whole School Maths

To help all children learn and become fluent using their times tables facts we have the Club 99 challenge which lets them earn stickers and badges.

We will be continuing Pre Club 99 and Club 99 at Moorlands again this year as we want to help improve the fluency of the children’s mental calculations. This year children are expected to achieve a 95% pass mark to be classified as a pass. When passed, children are awarded a sticker in assembly and will then move onto practising for the next club.  If they achieve 99 Club, they receive a badge.

 Pre Club 99

This club works on basic number facts the children will have learnt across Key Stage 1. The aim is to improve the children’s mental calculation skills, therefore they should be passed with no learning resources to support. The clubs are organised across 10 groups (named 1–10) and increase in difficulty according to facts learnt across Key stage 1.

Club 1

Addition and subtraction pairs to 5 including some missing numbers.

Example: 3 + ….. = 5     or      5 - …… = 2

Club 2

Addition and subtraction pairs to 10 including some missing numbers.

Example: 8 + ……. = 10     or     10  - ….. = 7

Club 3

Addition and subtraction pairs to 20 including some missing numbers.

Example: 11 + ……. = 20     or     20  - ….. = 13

Club 4

Doubles and halves to 20.

Example: 16 + 16 = …….      Or        ½ of 14 = …….

Club 5

Doubles and halves to 40.

Example: 22 + 22 = …….      Or        ½ of 24 = …….

Club 6

Near doubles. Children should be able to apply their knowledge of doubles and adjust by adding or subtracting 1.

Example: 9 + 8 = …….   (8 doubles +1) or (9 doubled -1)      Or   14 + 15 =

Club 7

Adding and subtracting 10 from any given number below 50

Example: 37 + 10 = ……..      or          32 – 10 = ……….

Club 8

Subtracting one or two digit numbers from numbers below 25

Example: 18 – 7 = ……..      or           20 – 11 =

Club 9

Months of the Year

Example: 3rd month = ……………        or 7th month = ………………..

Club 10

Number sequences counting forwards and backwards in two’s, five’s or ten’s

Example: 12, 14, ……….., 18 , ………., 20, ……… , ………….,   26

Club 99

Once the children have passed the Pre Club 99, they move onto Club 99. This club works on multiplication and division facts. Again, it is a mental calculation test that the children need to pass without learning resources to support them. The times tables already learnt will be consolidated in the next club.

To achieve Club 99, children need to be able to confidently know all their times tables up to their 12 times tables and the related division facts. Once your child achieves Club 99, they will move onto using and applying these multiplication and division facts. They may also be given previously passed clubs to ensure they are practising and consolidating previous learning.

Year 2 will only go up as far as Club 55.

If a child has achieved Club 55 in year 2, they can go back to Club 11 and do the challenge.  There is a challenge for Club 11 to 55.  The challenges use multiples of the times table. E.g. 20 x 8 =

As before, once the children have completed Club 99, there is a Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Challenge that introduces decimals, multiples and negative numbers.

An example of each club can be found on the website. (Please not this may not be the exact questions they will answer as we have three different options for each club.)

We hope our club system will continue to motivate and challenge the children to learn and apply their mental calculations in their daily work. Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher if you have any questions.
