Day Three Part One:

Sun, Showers and Soaring Rockets: Year 6 Blast Off into Day Two!

What a day we’ve had on our Year 6 residential!

After a much better night’s sleep (so much so that a few children required a gentle “second wake-up call”), we all headed down to a breakfast feast of fluffy pancakes drenched in maple syrup or chocolate sauce, plus mountains of yoghurt, fruit, and fresh orange and apple juice. A strong start to the day… and just as well!

Because the weather decided to treat us to a 30-minute monsoon for our first activity. Naturally, we powered through like the intrepid explorers we are, and the sunshine returned triumphantly right on cue.

After drying off and catching our breath, we refuelled with a hearty lunch of hot dogs and goujons or veggie sausages – the perfect energy boost before our afternoon adventures continued.

The bottle-rocket firing was a huge hit – some rockets soared so far we briefly considered contacting air-traffic control. From there, children threw themselves into more climbing and bushcraft. Using ferro rods to spark cotton wool dipped in Vaseline and then adding birch kindling? Let’s just say we may have a few budding survival experts in the making. The Tree Top Trail was another favourite, with some children even practising their carols from the platforms – possibly the most dramatic choir rehearsal in school history.

During free time, football at dusk proved… ambitious. Playing while everyone is dressed head-to-toe in black added an extra challenge, but enthusiasm won the day (or at least didn’t break any ankles).

As I type, the sound of excited preparations for the disco is echoing down the corridor. I have it on good authority that a classic 6,7 dance is inevitable and that Mrs Ferguson is fully prepared to unleash her legendary Macarena moves (or whatever the cool kids are calling it now).

But first – Christmas Dinner!

We’re all having a brilliant time, making memories, laughing lots, and enjoying every moment. Still, we’re very much looking forward to being back home soon, full of stories to share.
